The Sleepy Lagoon

On the beautiful island of Flores in Indonesia, 28 kms east of Maumere, and nestled right at the water’s edge, sits our dream holiday home - the Sleepy Lagoon. Designed in 2010 by husband Dave, and built by him with lots of help from local community members, it utilises traditional style materials of coconut wood and bamboo with grass roof.
It's simple living here - no air conditioning or television, cold water showers, and minimal power provided by a small solar 12volt system with clunky diesel generator back up. There’s no direct road access so we usually walk down the beach from the main road about 500 metres if it’s low tide, or use a small boat. Mostly we eat the local fish or tofu with vegetables, and every week we shop at the nearby markets with occasional top ups from the ‘western’ style supermarket in Maumere.
With the gentle waves lapping directly in front of our house, and swaying coconut trees poking above the jungle at the back, we can kick back in a truly idyllic natural world. Living in this way for a few weeks each year is totally refreshing, and restores perspective on our privileged western lifestyle back home. Its always exciting to press ‘start’ on the automatic washing machine when we return!
